A free museum that tells the ancient history of Cártama! 🏺📜

"The Cártama Museum Collection is a wonderful surprise and highly recommended if you're in the area or want to explore the heritage of the Guadalhorce Valley! Located at Calle Rey Juan Carlos I, 47 in the heart of Cártama Pueblo, it's a modern cultural space in a renovated building that houses some 183-197 archaeological pieces (according to the recent catalog) that trace local history from Prehistory to the Modern Age. What impressed me most:
The largest collection of Iberian archaeology in the province of Málaga: decorated ceramics, ritual objects, votive offerings, and pieces that showcase the wealth of the ancient Iberians in the area. There are also Roman finds (mosaics, amphorae, coins), Late Antique artifacts, Andalusian artifacts (glazed ceramics, farmhouse elements), and Modern Age pieces, all well displayed with clear and informative explanatory panels.
An introductory video is available on the first floor." which provides context about Cártama and its historical evolution – very useful to start your visit.
Temporary exhibitions complement the permanent collection, and the space is organized on three levels with a functional and accessible design (no major barriers).
It's free, clean, well-lit, and has friendly staff who are happy to answer questions. Opening hours are usually Friday afternoons, Saturday mornings and afternoons, and Sunday mornings (it's best to confirm on the Town Hall website, as they vary seasonally). Ideal to combine with a stroll through Cártama's old town, its churches, the river, or nearby hiking trails.
In March, the town is quiet, the weather is perfect, and there are no queues. Perfect for families (children love the antique artifacts and the simple explanations), archaeology enthusiasts, or anyone looking for a different cultural activity without spending a lot.

5/5 stars! It's a small museum but packed with content, showcasing Cártama's rich past in a simple and engaging way. If you're passing through (near Málaga city but with a rural feel), don't miss out! Don't doubt it – you'll be surprised! 😍🏛️🪨

Cártama has just opened its museum, and although it's small and doesn't yet have a large collection, it's impressive. The first thing you see is a video introducing the history of the different cultures that have passed through Cártama. It's very nice and definitely a must-see; it's well worth it.
Let's hope that one day it will be much bigger and we can reclaim all the pieces that have been taken over the years and are currently in other museums, such as the statues and mosaics that can be seen in the Customs Museum in Málaga.

An archaeological museum worthy of admiration, not only for its contents but also for its location in a small town in the province of Málaga. This is the town of Cártama, with a history spanning more than 28 centuries, where different cultures have settled in this strategic territory, situated on the right bank of the Guadalhorce River. From the Phoenicians and Romans to the Visigoths, Arabs, and Christians, all have left their legacy in these lands. Of particular note are the Roman-era remains, including marble sculptures that were exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum and are currently on display in the Málaga Archaeological Museum. The figure of archaeologist Francisco Melero, director of the excavations carried out in the municipality and his work in disseminating information about the finds, deserves special mention. The relevant authorities should promote the conservation and exhibition of archaeological discoveries in the towns where they are found, thereby enhancing their culture and economy. Admission is free.

The Cártama Museum Collection is an exceptional space that plays a fundamental role in preserving local history. This museum houses a valuable collection that documents the rich past of the municipality, from its origins to the present day. It is a must-see for anyone wishing to learn about and understand Cártama's cultural heritage. I highly recommend a visit to discover the traditions, customs, and events that have shaped the identity of this town. An educational and enriching experience for all ages.

A unique space that, thanks to its design and the importance of the artifacts it houses, is a true benchmark of culture and archaeology.
Congratulations to the people of Cartama, to its governing team for making this Museum Collection possible, and especially to one of the people who worked hardest to create it, Francisco Melero García.
