Its construction dates back to the second half of the 16th century, although the Palace of the Marquises of Peña de los Enamorados has undergone various renovations and additions throughout its history.

The exterior features seven bays of openings, with grilles on the ground floor and balconies on the main floor, topped by an attic or loft, which was added later. The towers follow the Antequera style. Very little of the original interior layout remains due to the fire it suffered during the Spanish Civil War.

The Palace of the Marquises of Peña de los Enamorados is currently the headquarters of the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Antequera, Málaga.

This building, located on Santa Clara Street, is one of the most elegant and understated examples of 18th-century Antequera Baroque architecture. Although its name evokes the famous legend of the Peña de los Enamorados (Lovers' Rock), the palace owes its name to the noble title of the family that commissioned its construction, the Marquises of Peña de los Enamorados, one of the city's most influential lineages.

One of the architectural curiosities of this palace is its stone façade. Unlike other palaces of the period that favored excessive ornamentation, this one features a design of very pure and balanced lines. If you look at the upper part of the main door, you will see the family's coat of arms carved in great detail, which served to proclaim the lineage and power of its owners to all who passed by on the street.

Inside, the palace follows the traditional layout of the grand noble houses of Antequera: a large entrance hall leading to a columned courtyard. This courtyard is the heart of the building, designed not only to organize the rooms but also to provide light and coolness during the hot Andalusian summers. The columns are typically made of red limestone, extracted from the local quarries of El Torcal, giving it that warm tone so characteristic of the city's monuments.

An interesting anecdote about this noble title is that it was granted by King Philip V in 1711 to Don Bartolomé de Aguilar y Rojas. The choice of the name of the marquisate (referring to the Peña, or Rock) was not accidental; it forever linked the family to the most sacred and legendary geographical landmark in the entire region, ensuring that their name would be inextricably linked to the very identity of Antequera.

Although the building has served various purposes today and is not always fully accessible to the public, its façade remains a must-see on any palace tour of the city. It represents that "stately Antequera" that flourished thanks to agriculture and trade, transforming the streets into a parade of stone doorways and lookout towers from which the marquesses watched over their estates in the fertile plain.
