Málaga's historic core, bounded by the Guadalmedina river to the west, the port to the south and the slopes of Mount Gibralfaro to the east. The district contains the Cathedral, the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba fortress, the Picasso Museum and the Pompidou Centre, plus the main shopping street Calle Marqués de Larios. Inside Distrito Centro sit the well-known sub-areas of Centro Histórico, Soho, La Merced and Lagunillas. The area is almost entirely pedestrianised, served by Metro Atarazanas and the Málaga–Centro Alameda rail station.

Andalusia Avenue runs through Malaga in both directions, east and west. It connects the city center with the M20 motorway exits, which lead to Fuengirola or to Granada and Seville to the north. At one of its roundabouts is the headquarters of the Malaga Police Station (Regional Police), where NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) and Red Card applications for refugees are processed.
