About the neighbourhood: Churriana

Originally a village to the south-west, now part of Málaga municipality, sitting between the airport and the foothills. Churriana keeps a recognisable village centre with the Iglesia de San Antonio Abad and the Casa-Museo de Gerald Brenan. The area is bordered by the Guadalhorce river and includes the Jardín Botánico de la Concepción on its northern edge. Easily reached from the airport (under 10 minutes) and from central Málaga by the A-7053 road and Cercanías rail at Aljaima.

Overall just about okay - wouldn’t come again. I really dislike when cups and cutlery come out of the dishwasher looking stained or dirty; it’s unappealing to eat with. My sister had the Toscana salad, which she said was nice, I had the carrot cous cous salad and it was so dry and lacked flavour. The club sandwich was fine, but using four pieces of bread felt excessive. I also ordered the tropical hibiscus drink, which tasted like pure syrup — couldn’t drink it at all.

Fantastic service , good and atmosphere. I was with my wife and I thought she paid the bill as I had gone to the toilet and soon after we left. Only later my wife somehow mentioned and we rushed back to the place to settle the bill. The staff were very considerate. Thank you so much guys you all are just perfect. So sorry to have forgotten to pay 🙏🏽🙏🏽

I have now eaten at the Vips in Plaza Mayor twice, both times just before flying home, because it is perfectly positioned for the classic pre-airport ritual. You fill up the rental car at the petrol station outside Plaza Mayor, you try to remember where the boot release is, you question every life decision that led you to flying today, and then — salvation — Vips. One last genuinely pleasant experience before you descend into the madness of airports, queues, scanners, and fellow travellers who appear to have forgotten how walking works.

And what continues to amaze me is this. The food is actually good. Not “fine considering it's a chain” good. Actually good. In fact, it is better than several of the restaurants in Plaza Mayor that pretend to be far more serious than they are. Which is both funny and slightly tragic for them.

The first time, I had the club sandwich. A sensible choice. Very straightforward. But this time I ordered the Papito, which is their steak sandwich, and it was absolutely superb. Tender steak, proper flavour, the kind of sandwich that makes you reconsider leaving Spain at all. It is now my official go-to. I may even start choosing flights based entirely on whether I have enough time to get one.

The staff are equally brilliant. Completely chilled, unfazed by the chaos around them, and exactly the sort of people you want serving you when your phone is ringing like a fire alarm. They keep the coffees coming with the precision of a Formula One pit crew. Turn your head for a moment and another cup appears. Wizardry.

So yes. Vips, Plaza Mayor. Close enough to the airport to be practical, civilised enough to make you forget what comes next, and serving a steak sandwich that frankly has no business being this good.

Nice atmosphere and a pleasant place to sit for a while. The order was taken quickly and served without much delay.
However, the staff seemed more focused on each other than on the guests. The waiter came across as somewhat absent and rushed, which made the interaction feel less welcoming.
The coffee itself was not bad, but unfortunately it was lukewarm. Also, I was given a soup spoon instead of a teaspoon, which felt quite odd.
Advice: a smile and friendliness cost nothing. And it would be good to heat the milk properly so the coffee is served at the right temperature.
