Top drinking experience. This is a standing only bar that serves around 10 local wine varieties (regular and fortified wine). Although they have some tapas, don’t rely on this place for food - most of the people don’t order food and it didn’t look too appealing. The staff members were really nice and efficient.
Seco wine was fine, just regular normal wine and therefore not as interesting.
Pajarete 1908 tasted really great, similar to Madeira.
Vermut was really nice - served with lemon which added some flavour. Extremely drinkable.
Malaga Quina - was slightly less concentrated than Pajarete and higher alcohol. Nice comparison point!
Overall this place is great for a 20 minutes stop. Definitely recommend as a must in Malaga!

This place is a wonderfully authentic slice of Málaga; packed with both locals and curious tourists, all drawn in by its old-world charm and barrel-lined walls.

It’s not the easiest place to navigate if you’re unfamiliar with the wines, and the standing-only setup adds to the bustle. Service is quick but can feel a little brusque.

Come for the atmosphere and history rather than comfort; it’s all part of the experience.

Absolutely loved our visit to Antigua Casa de Guardia. Such a unique and authentic experience and probably one of the most atmospheric places we visited in Málaga.

We tried several sweet wines served directly from the barrels at the counter, and every single one was delicious. The small cheese plate was also excellent. One of the coolest details: the bill is written directly onto the wooden bar with chalk and wiped away afterwards, which perfectly matches the historic vibe of the place.

The staff was incredibly friendly and impressively fast, even with the busy atmosphere. Important to know: this is mostly a standing-at-the-bar kind of place with almost no seating, but honestly, that’s part of the charm. It feels lively, traditional and wonderfully unpolished in the best possible way.

We went in the early afternoon and it was busy but still very enjoyable. Would come back immediately for another glass of Málaga wine. 🍷

Antigua Casa de Guardia is one of those places that doesn’t try to impress you… and that’s exactly why it stays with you.
You walk in and it feels like stepping back in time: barrels everywhere, worn floors, people crowded around the bar, and a constant noise that’s half chaos, half real life. There’s no menu to study, no formal service — here you just point at the wine and drink.
The wine comes simple, no unnecessary explanations, often sweet, strong, and very local. The bill? Still written in chalk directly on the bar, something that feels almost surreal nowadays but completely normal there.
It’s not comfortable, not elegant, not quiet. But it’s authentic. It’s one of those places that hasn’t changed for anyone, and because of that, it tells a real story.
If you’re looking for something refined or relaxing, this probably isn’t for you. But if you want to experience a piece of Málaga as it was — and in some ways still is — then it’s absolutely worth stepping in, even just for a glass.

A true living legend and a must-visit in Malaga. This authentic wine shop lets you relax and truly feel the history in the air. The staff are incredibly friendly and serve excellent, traditional wines straight from the barrel. On top of that, it’s very budget-friendly.
