I won't come back to Mijas and won't recommend it to anyone of my friends to go there. I heard Mijas is a place where they honor donkeys and was positively surprised that the donkey that "everyone should take a picture with" (according to our host) was in fact a metal statue. This was at night. The day after I was shocked and terrified to see that they're REAL donkeys exploited as tourist attraction. Unbelievable! These poor animals are clearly broken, in distress, have very sad eyes and look very tired. They can't even lay down!! I soon discovered that the animals stand on the main plaza every day to get mounted by tourists and at night are confined to be STANDING in a dark, tiny stable, tied up, without possiblity to sit or lie down. Imagine: Standing their whole lives and NEVER a moment to roam free or sleep properly!! I love animals and it breaks my heart. The Ayuntamiento of Mijas should be ashamed of themselves to allow this cruelty! And this in modern times. In South America, where Spanish colonisers introduced the practice of horse/donkey carriages some 500 years ago, the practice is already OUTLAWED for several years now and horse carriages are forbidden because of animal welfare! Spain is obviously decades behind more progressive countries when it comes to animal protection.
