About the neighbourhood: Distrito Centro

Málaga's historic core, bounded by the Guadalmedina river to the west, the port to the south and the slopes of Mount Gibralfaro to the east. The district contains the Cathedral, the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba fortress, the Picasso Museum and the Pompidou Centre, plus the main shopping street Calle Marqués de Larios. Inside Distrito Centro sit the well-known sub-areas of Centro Histórico, Soho, La Merced and Lagunillas. The area is almost entirely pedestrianised, served by Metro Atarazanas and the Málaga–Centro Alameda rail station.

Interesting museum that is not at all busy and where the assistants are super friendly. I particularly liked the three shorts films from José Val del Omar that you can watch inside a dark room of the second floor. You can also visit his studio and lots of equipment that he used, that in the top floor. In this top floor there are some amazing black and white photographs.
It’s free to visit which is a plus.
Excellent little museum, very helpful and friendly staff. Came here mainly for the Errazuriz photography exhibition but also saw the rest of the exhibits. It was totally free of charge!
Very disappointed. We crossed the whole of Málaga to visit this museum because all the information online indicated that it was open. However, when we arrived, it was closed, and there was no notice or explanation at the entrance or online. Even after checking again, the opening hours still showed that the museum was open. Unexpected closures can happen, but the least visitors deserve is some clear information to avoid wasting their time and making a pointless trip. Better communication would be greatly appreciated.

Free museum! I recommend the visit, beautiful contemporary arts of Spanish history and more! I especially appreciated the arts about the post-civil war era and the building of a Spanish national identity.

Interesting building, and free entry.
At the moment, and till the beginning of January 2025, they are hosting an exhibition of Antonio Montiel.
His art is very good. Although, most of the portraits are of famous Spanish people, which I don't know, apart from Reina Sofia, Rey Filipe VI, and Federico Garcia Lorca, his work is remarkable. There was a section about the divine, which was very interesting too.
Don't miss the other (I think permanent) exhibitions.
